What is FIST?

FIST is a youth philanthropy organization funded by the Dekko Foundation under the direction of the Steuben County Community Foundation. Students from Hamilton, Angola, and Fremont become members as 7th graders and remain through high school. Each school has an adult representative. The focus of the group is to promote philanthropy among young people.

What does FIST do?

FIST meets once a month to plan ways to empower the youth of Steuben County and assist in service projects. Collectively they give over about 800 hours a year of their time to improve thier communities.

How do I join?

A presentation is made to all 7th graders at each school explaining FIST. All interested students are invited to take an application. Applications are reviewed without names showing. Three students from each school are selected for interviews. One student from each school is chosen to serve until graduation.

How can other students be involved?

FIST invites other students to participate in volunteer activities they sponsor or are asked to participate in by other agencies or organizations. For example, FIST sponsors Trick or Treat for Project Help. They choose a date close to Halloween and go door to door collecting canned goods to donate to Project Help and other communtiy food banks.

How do I get a FIST grant?

FIST is in the process of identifying their grant priorities and will announce its plans for community grants soon. In themeantime, you can visit our Grants page, or click here.
