Chair, Board of Directors
Jim Burns grew up in Richmond, Indiana, and moved to Steuben County after graduating from Indiana University Bloomington with both his undergraduate and his law degree. He worked as Deputy Prosecutor and served as County Court Judge for a time before opening his private practice law firm in 1985.
His support of SCCF traces back to its infancy, when Jim was part of writing the articles of incorporation and original organizational bylaws in 1991. Jim was introduced to the SCCF board by an outgoing member who was also an attorney.
He joined the board 7 years ago to provide legal knowledge and learn more about the community foundation’s role in Steuben County. In that time, he also served as chairman of the Steuben County Fiber Network board (formerly known as iMAN) for four years during its transition from a small network to its current status as an important community asset.
In addition to the SCCF board of directors, Jim has served on the boards at RISE, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Fremont Chamber of Commerce. He was also the Campaign Chairman for a year during his board service with United Way.
Jim believes one of the greatest assets of Steuben County is the variety of opportunities for people to enjoy nature and the outdoors. With key pieces in place, such as Trine University and the Steuben County Fiber Network, Jim hopes SCCF can work with other community organizations to promote economic development and community enhancement.
