Poverty in Steuben County
Poverty can be hidden in plain sight. Those who struggle don’t fit any one profile—it affects a spectrum of people, in a variety of circumstances, all resulting in their inability to meet their families’ basic needs, such as food, clothing, shelter and more.
While our community is known for its scenic nature and lake life culture, the wellbeing of our Steuben County neighbors who live here full-time is crucial. Ten percent of Steuben County residents live in poverty, and countless more are just above the poverty line and do not qualify for support. That means you probably know someone who struggles to meet their needs.

Our neighbors’ ability to access basic needs is dependent upon socioeconomic factors—both in and out of their control—such as education, income, housing, transportation, childcare, healthcare, community services and more. With the average household containing at least two individuals with a median household income of $68,837 (approximately $4,300/month after taxes), and the average cost of childcare costing $641/month, expenses can add up quickly.
A Plan in Motion
Steuben County Community Foundation is committed to better understanding our neighbors, so we can better support them. In 2023, we took the first step by hosting an event to convene community leaders to give attendees a comprehensive perspective of how complex poverty can be. We have been actively meeting with community members to gauge understanding and raise awareness.
